Caroline Preece – Minimalism

Although she did not pick up a camera until 2013, Caroline grew up surrounded by photo books — Michael Kenna, Brassaï, Henri Cartier-Bresson — and those images left a mark. Their influence still shapes how she sees: simplicity, balance, and storytelling. A relationship break-up was the push that finally got her started in photography and what began as a distraction quickly turned into a passion. Her work has been recognised in competitions including the Minimalist Photographer of the Year, the International Photography Awards, the British Photography Awards, and Landscape Photographer of the Year. It has also appeared in FRAMES Magazine and has been exhibited at the Mall Galleries in London.

The aim of Caroline’s talk is to help us understand what minimalism is, that the genre is a lot broader than we might first think and that we can apply it to any genre of photography. It looks at how some minimalism concepts can improve our non-minimalistic images; and encourage us to go out and have a go at photographing in this manner. She will explore the history of minimalism in art and photography, examples of different approaches to minimalism, common characteristics of minimalist images, how the principles can be applied to any genre and the impact of negative space.
